The Legendary Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics became a part of the Basketball Association of America in 1946. The merger in1949 between the NBL and the BAA brought about the NBA and the Celtics were a part of that as well.

Unlike many professional sports teams, the Celtics have never changed their name and have never moved from the original city where they got their start. They are also unique in that they were the first professional team to integrate, drafting and signing Chuck Cooper, an African American, in 1950. They later became the first team to have an all African American starting lineup.

From 1957 to 1986 the Celtics were a consistently winning team, taking home 16 of their 17 championship titles. They have 20 conference titles to their credit and have won 27 division titles. The late eighties and the nineties were a rough time for the team. They still won occasionally, but they had lost quite a bit of their former glory. 2008 and 2009 have been more successful, earning the team their seventeenth championship in 2008, and giving them one of their divisional championships in 2009.

The Boston Celtics play their home games at the TD Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts. The arena seats more than 18,000 people. Completed in 1995, the stadium cost 160 million dollars. Renovations were completed before the 2006/2007 season. The changes brought the arena up to date, making the venue more competitive against other stadiums such as the Wachovia Center and FedEx Forum, among others.

In the community the Boston Celtics are very active, supporting their area and the less fortunate families there. The team seems to have a special place in their hearts for children, participating in many programs to help raise up the spirits of the underprivileged. They have even gone so far as to start their own foundation which partners with other charities and organizations to promote wellness and provide services to area children in need.

What professional sports team would be complete without a little rivalry? Certainly the Boston Celtics are not suffering any shortage in that area. They have the usual individual rivalries, most notably between Paul Pierce and LeBron James. Team rivals include the Hawks, Pacers, Nets, Cavaliers, Pistons, and 76ers, although no rivalry is as intense as that between the Celtics and the Lakers.

Often considered the greatest rivalry in the league, the Celtics have faced the Lakers eleven times in the NBA finals. Between the two teams, they make up more than half of the championship wins in the NBA. During the Celtics’ less successful years the rivalry cooled somewhat but was renewed once again in 2008 when the teams faced off in the finals, with the Celtics winning.

Few teams in the professional arena are as successful and long lasting as the Boston Celtics. With their history and background, and the skills they show on the court, the Celtics are one of the most fun teams to watch.
